Why Do Gutters Get Frozen?

Gutters freeze when clogged water turns to ice.

Gutters catch and divert rainwater that would otherwise drip off the roof edge. Water freezes at 32 degrees, and then the ice bonds with the surface it is on. Gutters freeze when temperatures drop below freezing.

Damage

Ice expands as it freezes. Gutters can twist or crack as the water freezes to ice. Ice is stronger than the vinyl the gutter is made of, especially if there is a lot of water in the gutter when it freezes.

Ice Dams

Ice dams form when the flow of water becomes blocked, whether by too many leaves in the system or ice buildup. Melting snow from higher up on the roof cannot flow past the ice dam and may back up underneath the roofing material. Roof leaks may occur when the water finds a way through small cracks in the roof sheathing. This is most common on north-facing roofs which do not see the sun all winter.

Prevention/Solution

You can remove gutters in the fall, or clean them thoroughly of debris, before temperatures drop below freezing. Water from autumn rains and melting snow will drip off the roof edge and may form large icicles. You can also install electric heat tape or de-icing tape to melt ice and snow and prevent gutters from freezing. Several products are available. Install according to manufacturer's directions.
