Weight Laws for Tri-Axle Dump Trucks in Alabama
Alabama regulates the amount of weight commercial trucks may haul on state and local roads based upon the number of axles and overall vehicle length to assure safety for all vehicles traveling on public roads.
-
Weight Restrictions
-
Under Section 32-9-20(4)(c) of the Code of Alabama, Alabama limits tri-axle dump truck maximum loads based upon the distance in feet between the first and last axles of the truck. Where the distance is 8 inches or less, the maximum weight is 42,000 pounds. The maximum weight increases by 500 to 1,500 pounds for each additional inch of distance between the axles, with a maximum weight of 75,000 pounds when the distance between the axles is 44 inches or greater.
Exemptions
-
Alabama allows for exemptions in specific circumstances. Dump trucks, concrete mixer trucks, fuel trucks and oil transporters are not required to conform to the axle spacing requirements for purposes of calculating maximum allowable weights.
-
Enforcement
-
An officer who has reason to believe that height, width or weight of a truck is in excess of the maximum limits is authorized to order a truck to be driven to the nearest weighing station for evaluation, as long as a weigh station is within five miles.
