Bentonite API Specifications

The American Petroleum Institute has specifications regarding the handling of bentonite and a variety of other products. These standards are set to ensure safety and health when handling natural gas resources.

  1. About API Specification 13A

    • API Specification 13A is written in regards to drilling fluids materials. This specification includes guidelines for drilling oils and natural gasses, including bentonite. This standard must be followed by manufacturers of bentonite.

    • API Specification 13A dictates that when bentonite is used in preparing a slurry, the bentonite should be either powdered or granular in form. The bentonite should also be of premium grade sodium cation montmorillonite.

    Bentonite Certification

    • All bentonite used in the slurry should come with a Certificate of Compliance. This certificate can be obtained from the manufacturer of the bentonite.
