Why Does My Mouse Freeze Up on Computer Start?

Why Does My Mouse Freeze Up on Computer Start? thumbnail
Computer mice have evolved significantly since they were first invented.

When the computer operating system first starts, many processes start working to prepare your computer to use all of the hardware. The mouse is a simple piece of hardware but it can run into problems because of several issues at startup.

  1. Ports

    • A computer mouse connects through a port on the computer. Older computers had special mouse ports, while newer computers use USB ports. Mouse ports would be a problem because they shared their resources with other hardware and a conflict could cause the mouse to freeze. USB ports don't have this type of problem, but a bad USB port still can cause the mouse to freeze.

    Computer Issues

    • Often, the likely cause of a mouse freezing is that the computer itself is frozen and seeing a non-moving mouse is just a sign of this condition. If you use your keyboard you may discover that nothing works.

    • The mouse display on a computer will start working soon after start up. However, while the computer is loading software or working on other processes it may cause the mouse to freeze until it is done working on other things. After waiting for a while, you may notice that the mouse will unfreeze.
