Medical Equipment Service Tech Training

Learn to service biomedical equipment, such as ultrasound machines.

Individuals interested in a career as a medical equipment technician can pursue a postsecondary associate's degree in biomedical equipment technology. The length of the program varies according to the applicant's prior education, ranging from 34 credits for individuals with an associate's degree in a related field to 120 credits for prospective students with no academic credentials.

Curriculum

Courses in a shorter program include clinical instrumentation, imaging equipment, diagnostic care and therapeutic care equipment. The 120-credit associate of applied science degree includes a combination of core and general education credits for a well-rounded education. Courses include AC and DC principles of electronics, applied physics, biomedical equipment, microprocessor fundamentals and chemistry.

Internship

Biomedical equipment technology programs include an internship where students gain practical training in the field. Throughout internships, students work in venues that include hospitals, clinics and laboratories under the supervision of senior staff members.

Certification

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is the responsible certifying body for biomedical equipment technicians. Graduates of an associate's degree program must obtain a minimum of two years of work experience in the field prior to receiving certification from the AAMI.
