Why Did My Epson Laser Photo Smudge?

A laser printer should produce smudge-free copies if it is properly run and maintained.

There are several reasons why a laser print out from an Epson machine might be smudged. Investigate your machine and paper selection to troubleshoot the problem and return to clear, crisp copies.

  1. Ink Cartridge Issues

    • Check all the print cartridges if you are using a color laser copier. Some of them may be low on ink and will produce a dim or spotted and smudged copy. One of the cartridges might also be faulty.

    Printhead Problems

    • Remember to check all the printheads if you are using a color laser copier. The printheads can be faulty, or get clogged with toner, causing smudges. Use printhead cleaning solution to keep copies looking sharp and clear.

    Type of Paper

    • Some papers will be more absorbent than others. Glossy paper for photos is more likely to smudge than matte paper. Use the paper recommended in your printer's instruction booklet.

    Dirty or Damaged Rollers

    • The rollers in the printer that move the paper from one end to the other might be dirty or damaged and will need to be cleaned carefully or replaced.

    Fuser Problems

    • The fuser in the printer heats the paper and ink quickly in order to fix the ink on the paper before it rolls out of the machine and onto the tray. If the fuser is not heating up properly, the ink will be only partly fixed and can smudge as it rolls through or gets handled. Be sure the printer is not being used in a very cold room or has not yet had time to warm up. You can replace the fuser with the help of an Epson fuser replacement kit.
