Directions for Butterfly Loom Coasters

Directions for Butterfly Loom Coasters thumbnail
You can make attractive butterfly loom coasters quickly and cheaply.

A butterfly loom can help you make an attractive coaster out of any color and type of yarn you choose in only a few minutes. Use a single color of yarn or use a second contrasting color to knot off the coaster. Use the baby or the small butterfly loom depending on which size coaster you prefer.

  1. Wrapping the Coaster

    • Hold the loom with the hinges facing you. Slide the closing bolt shut securely. Fasten one end of the yarn to the loom with tape. Start wrapping up and down through all the slots on the loom. Turn the loom counterclockwise to bring you to the next row to wrap. Continue wrapping the yarn using moderate tension until you reach your starting point. Wrap yarn again all the way around the loom. Continue wrapping the yarn until the coaster reaches the desired thickness.

    Knotting Off the Coaster

    • Knot off all the thicknesses of yarn you have wrapped around the loom. Use either the ladder stitch or the X stitch. Be sure to knot tightly. When you are finished with your last knot, snip the yarn off the skein.

    Finishing the Coaster

    • Remove the tape from the end of the loom and yarn, and snip off any excess yarn. Release the bolt of the loom and fold the sides together to remove the coaster from the loom. Turn the coaster over so the knotting off is on the bottom and use on your table.
