What Does OSHA Require on a Construction Job Site in New York? thumbnail
Rules to maintain a safe construction site protect workers, pedestrians and those living near the work site.

Fatalities on construction sites occur more than any other workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration enforces guidelines to ensure workers, pedestrians and people living near New York construction sites can avoid accidents and unsafe conditions.

  1. Eligible Employees

    • Only employees who have completed OSHA safety training are allowed to work on-site. Training includes recognizing safety hazards and working with potentially toxic substances. Once employees have engaged in practical application of safety procedures and evaluated the training for effectiveness, they will be allowed on-site.

    Scaffolding Safety

    • Scaffolding must be constructed on stable ground and be able to hold its own weight plus four times the maximum allowable load. It must be erected 10 feet from power lines; and must include toeboards, midrails and guardrails. If scaffolding has to be dismantled or moved, it has to be supervised by a site manager.

    Hazard Alerts

    • Toxic chemicals that can cause fires, respiratory problems or skin burns must be clearly recognizable by employees. A Material Safety Data Sheet must be posted visibly to provide easy reference. The MSDS must be available in all languages used on the site. NYC construction sites must also have written instructions on spill clean up and protective gear.
