Training for Coronary Sinus Catheterization

Coronary sinus catheterizing is a procedure that is performed by specialized cardiac technicians, nurses and physicians. The procedure involves inserting a catheter through the femoral or radial artery in order to reach the heart. The procedure allows physicians to confirm any defects in circulation with the heart.

Curriculum

The curriculum of coronary cardiac catheterization is divided between level one and level two. Level one is about understanding anatomy, basic imaging principles, cardiac pathologies and cardiac hemodynamic assessment. Level two involves understanding coronary physiology and a deeper understanding of radiological images.

Length

Coronary sinus catheterization training for physicians can be completed through a fellowship, taking about one year of training. Cardiac technicians who assist during the procedure train four to six months.

Certification

Certification in coronary sinus catheterization for physicians is completed at the end of the fellowship following a standarized certification exam. For technicians and nurses, the conclusion of the program requires completion of a certification exam.
