Information on Rainbow Eucalyptus

A rainbow eucalyptus is not an easily forgotten sight. The bark is the star of this tropical tree with color streaks so vivid, they appear to be more like a painting than a plant. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • It would be difficult to overlook the Indonesian gum tree named for its unmistakable bark. Rainbow trees are adorned with color-streaked bark. The streaks of color are in combinations of green, red, purple and blue.

    Habitat

    • The startlingly beautiful tree known as rainbow eucalyptus and rainbow gum is native to Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Unfortunately for admirers in cooler climates, rainbow eucalyptus is a heat-loving tropical specimen that is unlikely to thrive in most of the United States. Humidity brings out the best in this tree.

    Size

    • Some rainbow eucalyptus specimens have grown to 75 feet high with a branch span of 45 feet. This tree may grow 9 feet a year under the proper conditions.
