Road Regulations for UTVs in Tennessee

Road Regulations for UTVs in Tennessee thumbnail
Vehicle operators need must have their Class D driver license with them while driving.

Utility vehicles (UTVs) that meet certain criteria are permitted on roads with a speed limit of 40 miles per hour or less. Registration of the vehicle is required.

  1. Criteria

    • Your UTV may qualify as a medium-speed vehicle (MSV) if it has four wheels, is gas- or electric-powered and has a top speed of 30 to 35 mph. Being an MSV can qualify it for on-road use. Further, the MSV must have safety equipment similar to other on-road vehicles, including turn signals, head and tail lamps, a parking brake, mirrors, windshield and seat belts, as well as a vehicle identification number (VIN).

    Registration

    • Before using your MSV on the road, you must bring a copy of the vehicle's manufacturer's statement of origin (MSO) along with regular vehicle registration information to the local county clerk's office.

    Exceptions

    • Golf carts do not qualify for on-road use unless they have been modified to meet on-road requirements. You must submit proof of these modifications to the local county clerk, who determines the suitability of the cart for on-road use.
