How Does an FTA Satellite Work?

How Does an FTA Satellite Work? thumbnail
FTA satellite channels are unencrypted.

Free to air (FTA) channels are signals that are unscrambled and are available to the general public. You can receive FTA with just about any satellite dish, but you will also need extra tuning equipment.

  1. Identification

    • Premium satellite TV providers, such as Dish Network and Direct TV, scramble their channels unless you subscribe to their service. Broadcasters that send an FTA signal do not encrypt their data.

    Receiving FTA Channels

    • Just about any TV can receive basic network channels without special equipment. Receiving FTA channels requires a dish between 10 and 30 feet and a FTA satellite receiver.

    Tips

    • You will need a satellite tuner to redirect your satellite to the position of the signal; being off by a few degrees could mean you cannot view a channel. The LyngSat website has FTA signal coordinates available in the U.S.
