The Ford Y-block V8 engine was used in early Thunderbirds.

The Y-block overhead valve V8 engine was built by the Ford Motor Company from 1954 until 1964. It was designed to replace the outdated Ford flathead side-valve engine. It got its name from the Y-shaped cylinder configuration.

  1. Y-Block Displacements

    • The Ford Y-block engine was introduced in 1954 as a 239-cubic inch V8. The 272 and 292 Y-blocks came out in 1955. The 272 was used in standard model Fords. The 292 was used in Thunderbirds, Mercurys and high-end Fords. The 1956 312 was used in T-birds and all Mercury models.

    292 Y-Block

    • The 292-cubic inch Y-block engine was featured in the classic 1955 Ford Thunderbird convertible. It was called the "Thunderbird V8." It had a bore and stroke of 3.75 inches by 3.296 inches with an 8.5:1 compression ratio. It generated 193 horsepower at 4,400 rpm with 280 pound-feet of torque at 2,600 rpm.

    312 Y-Block

    • The Ford 312-cubic inch Y-block was known as the "Thunderbird Special V8." It was available in a 300 horsepower supercharged version. It featured a centrifugal blower type supercharger with an automatic variable-speed power-boost adapter. It had a bore and stroke of 3.80 inches by 3.44 inches with an 8.5:1 compression ratio.
