Wireless Network Adapter Cost
A wireless network adapter is a small device designed to allow non-wireless computers to be able to access wireless (Wi-Fi) networks. Today, virtually every laptop (and many desktop) computers are wireless, but adapters remain an inexpensive option for legacy machines.

Plan on spending under $50 for a wireless adapter. Wireless network adapters are almost always inexpensive (under $50), but before opening your wallet, you must read the fine print. Confirm that the card supports your operating system (OS) before purchasing it. The majority of these cards aren't Macintosh compatible, so if you own a Mac, you may have to spend a little more time shopping than your Windows counterparts do.
Compatibility
-
Chances are good that the adapter you chose will work with your router. Don't concern yourself too much with the standards of your adapter or router, since most are backwards compatible (e.g. work with earlier versions of the technology). If you buy an adapter that is G and/or N compatible, you won't have any trouble connecting in virtually any situation.

Expert Insight
-
Shopping for a wireless network adapter is a fairly simple process. There is a narrow range of products in the wireless network adapter category. The big names are the same companies that manufacture wireless routers, including Linksys, Belkin and Netgear. Understand that Apple-branded units (AirPort cards) are more expensive and have a proprietary design, meaning they're not compatible with any non-Apple computers.
