Cashiers take money and make change for customers who purchase items or services via a cash register. Occasionally, they need to run credit cards, print receipts, subtract coupons and charge gift cards, transactions that are typically handled via a computerized cash register.

  1. Education

    • Cashiers sometimes need a high school diploma, or the equivalent, to get hired. Others are high school students of legal working age who are employed on a part-time basis. While in school, cashiers who use computerized registers would be well-advised to take courses in computers, math, finance and communications (the latter to enhance their interactions with customers).

    Seminars

    • Some companies offer cashiers training through seminars or online courses that provide instruction on how to use a computerized system. These courses typically consist of lessons and hands-on training, and typically last no more than a day or two. Seminars generally cost $50 to $100 to attend.

    On the Job

    • The majority of cashiers who operate computerized cash registers can receive all the training they need while on the job. They typically learn under the watchful eye of a co-worker, manager or even an employee of the company that manufactured the register.
