North Dakota follows international building codes.

The North Dakota Department of Commerce, Division of Community Services is responsible for the adoption of, and any revisions to, the State Building Code. North Dakota has adopted the codes created by the International Code Council.

  1. State Code

    • The North Dakota State Building code consists of four separate, nationally recognized building codes: the International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC).

    Enforcement

    • A city, county or township in North Dakota must follow the provisions of the State Building Code if it wants to adopt and enforce a building code. They are allowed to amend the State Building Code to meet local needs.

    Exclusions

    • Some local jurisdictions are excluded from adopting the State Building Code. Under current law, any fully chartered Home Rule City is permitted to adopt another building code.
