What High-Definition Audio Device Is in the IBM Thinkpad Lenovo T60 2007-42U?

The Lenovo Thinkpad T60 2007-42U notebook computer's HD audio device is the HD Audio SoundMAX Codec model AD1981HD. Produced by Analog Devices, the codec enables the T60 to have both digital and analog audio capabilities.

Purpose

The AD1981HD codes and decodes audio data streams---hence the term "codec." The device is necessary for the T60 to be able to play music files, sound associated with Internet content, and the audio tracks of movies or games.

Features

The device supports 16-bit, 20-bit and 24-bit sound and has a dynamic range of more than 90 decibels. It also features jack presence detection, which allows programs to discern if there is a device plugged into an audio jack and to adjust sound accordingly.

Warning

The AD1981HD comes preinstalled on the T60's motherboard. While it's technically possible to remove or modify the device, it is not designed for user upgrades as it is subject to damage from electrostatic discharge if handled directly.
