Basic Paranormal Investigator Equipment
Researchers who are interested in the possibility that ghosts exist routinely use measuring and recording equipment to detect paranormal activity. Much of this equipment is inexpensive and easy to acquire, giving curious amateurs the opportunity to conduct their own research.

EMF Meters
-
Paranormal investigators use electromagnetic field (EMF) meters to measure electrical fluctuations in areas where they suspect supernatural activity. Many investigators believe that electrical disturbances will occur if a ghost is present. EMF meters are available in analog and digital models.
Cameras
-
Site investigations may include taking random pictures with a 35mm or digital camera to see if anything unusual (e.g., lights, orbs, apparitions or streaks) appears in the final photos.

Temperature Sensors
-
Reports of hauntings suggest that haunted areas exhibit cold spots and other temperature variations. Researchers commonly use infrared (IR) thermometers to monitor this phenomenon. Laser-equipped sensors are pricier than standard models, but tend to have greater accuracy, as well as the ability to upload temperature information to a remote computer.
Recording Devices
-
Researchers generally use analog and digital audio recorders to detect electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and other paranormal sounds, which are usually not audible during the recording process. According to Long Island Paranormal Investigators, digital recorders are preferable because they have a longer recording time, and make it easy to download audio files to a computer for closer analysis.
