Calico is an important material for traditional Jamaican clothing.

Clothing in Jamaica varies from traditional dress to the distinctive clothes worn by Rastafarians. Western dress is also prevalent.

  1. Traditional Dress

    • Traditional dress for women of Jamaica includes a skirt, top and calico headscarf. These dresses are typically very brightly colored, reflecting the spirit of the people. Men wear a traditional shirt with multiple pockets that is straight-bottomed and not tucked in.

    Western Dress

    • Many Jamaicans wear western clothing. Globalization has made items such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, jeans and hats readily available throughout the country. The island's warm weather calls for light clothing. Sandals and shorts are common in the summer.

    Rastafarian Dress

    • Rastafarian clothing uses the bright colors inspired by the Ethiopian flag. These colors are red, green and gold. The distinctive hat worn over a Rastafarian's dreadlocks is known as a tam. Rastafarian clothing is made from natural fibers.
