The Proper Storage of Dom Perignon

The Proper Storage of Dom Perignon thumbnail
Champagne can be stored for years in the proper conditions -- but you can drink it much sooner.

Dom Perignon is recognized as one of the finest champagnes in the world. When its namesake monk first tasted it, he reportedly said, "Come quickly brothers. I am tasting stars." Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • Dom Perignon was a monk who invented champagne in the 17th century. He not only created the method of blending wines to create that champagne, he designed thicker bottles and tied the corks down with string to prevent them from exploding.

    Storage

    • Champagne keeps best if stored in a cool, dark, damp space. The ideal temperature is about 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. A space slightly warmer or cooler is fine, but too much variance to this ideal could ruin the champagne. Keep the bottle on its side to prevent the cork from drying out.

    Longevity

    • Though champagne can be kept for years, in many cases it has already been aged to perfection before its sold -- there is no need to age it further at home. When you are ready to drink the champagne, make sure you refrigerate it for no more than two days.
