Classroom Locksmith Training

According to the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), the security industry has boomed since September 11, 2001, creating greater competition among professionals such as locksmiths. Therefore, training and reputation are even more important these days for a successful career as a locksmith.

  1. Purpose of Training

    • The ALOA requires classroom training in order to maintain membership in the organization and get certification. ALOA certification is important because it indicates a locksmith's professional status and skills. Classes also give locksmiths of all levels hands-on training with new technologies and equipment.

    Content of Training

    • Students in locksmith courses learn to use the basic tools of the trade such as dial calipers and lock-picking implements. Instruction includes information on identifying and duplicating keys, understanding and troubleshooting various kinds of lock assemblies and learning about safety issues and terminology. The hands-on training achieved in a classroom gives students the skills necessary to work as an apprentice locksmith.

    Finding Training

    • The ALOA offers the Basic Locksmith Training course and other topic instruction at its training center in Dallas, Texas. Facilitators provide workshops at the annual convention, as well. Many technical schools and community colleges offer basic and continuing education classes.
