Apple's iBook lets users take their computer anywhere.

An iBook G3 is a laptop computer manufactured by Apple. Several variations of the G3 iBook were distributed, including the colorful "clamshell" model and the standard white iBook. The last G3 iBook was discontinued in April 2004.

  1. Identification

Determine whether the problem is with the hard drive itself or a different issue, such as a fried motherboard or RAM chip, both of which can render a hard drive unreadable. Booting the iBook with a Mac OS installation disk or third-party utility disk, such as TechTool or DiskWarrior, can determine whether the hard drive is working.

    Repairing

    • If the hard drive is working, running a diagnostic tool may repair the disk so it's bootable. If your iBook is FireWire compatible, then boot it while holding down the "T" key and connect it to another Mac using a FireWire cable. If the internal hard drive is working, then the files on the drive will be mounted on the desktop of the second Mac.

    Expert Insight

If you still aren't sure exactly what the issue is, you may have to try the worst-case scenario: open the laptop and remove the hard drive. The best way to read a "raw" hard drive is to buy a case that houses the drive, essentially making it an external hard drive. Because taking apart (and reassembling) an iBook is difficult, use this method only as a last resort. If the drive is readable, the issue might not be the drive itself, but a computer component as described above.
