What is the Origin of the Ivy Plant?

The ivy plant (Hedera helix), also called English ivy, is an evergreen vine that thrives throughout the U.S. and overseas. It grows fast and becomes invasive if left unchecked. Despite its notoriety, the plant has a compelling history. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • The ivy plant's climbing vines attach to any sturdy surface, such as trees, brickwork or fences. Ivy produces a glue-like substance that adheres the vines to the chosen surface. The dark green, waxy leaves have three to five lobes. Ivy fruits in the late summer; its starburst-shaped fruit is yellow-green.

    History

    • Ivy is originally from Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa; early settlers first introduced the ivy plant to the Colonies in 1727. While sold as an ornamental plant, ivy is very invasive from Oregon up through British Columbia. English ivy stays green all year long, so it's considered a good landscape plant.

    Geography

    • Ivy plants grow all over the United States and flourish in woodland areas, fields and coastal areas. Ivy does best when planted under part shade and part sun. Ivy is intolerant of drought and needs moist soil.
