The individual must have at least five years experience in the development and design of network infrastructures and communications systems before being eligible to take the certification exam.

As part of a project design team, an RCDD works with other professionals including architects, contractors, and engineers. The RCDD demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in a wide array of specialized areas including communications, IT, audio/visual, safety, and security systems.

The RCDD oversees large and complex projects in the telecommunications industry. Initial tasks include creating construction drawings and specifications of new and existing telecommunications systems, monitoring work progress, determining project needs and providing solutions, and assuring timely completion of projects within budget.
