Ethernet networking is more common than phone-line or power line networking.

Although the vast majority of computer users are more familiar with Ethernet networking, you can hook up your computers using phone lines or even power lines. Phone line and power line networks can reduce extra wiring and may be more convenient.

  1. Phone Line Networks

    • Phone line networks require each computer to have a phone line adapter and a phone line plug nearby. Since most homes have wire capable of transmitting speeds over 10 megabit per second, this is cheaper than running Ethernet cables or when walls interfere with a Wi-Fi network.

    Power Line Network

    • Power line networks send data over a frequency not used by electrical appliances. The major players in power line networking, Intelogies and PowerPacket, use different technologies in their adapters and kits. This is typically the cheapest network -- costing $59 for the initial setup and $40 for each additional computer, according to Tech FAQ. Power line networks are also the slowest, usually getting no more than 350 kilobits per second.

    Ethernet

    • Ethernet networking runs over copper wire. Most computers come with an Ethernet card, but the falling price of wireless routers and cards make Ethernet networks not cost efficient for most home users.
