Industrial HVAC Training

Industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) technicians install, monitor and repair various units in everything from individual residences to large businesses. HVAC technicians must follow blueprints and written instructions to assemble, mount and fix units with a firm knowledge of the necessary tools.

  1. Education

    • Industrial HVAC technicians must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Many also receive degrees or certification (often also required) from community colleges or trade schools that offer related courses. Aspiring HVAC technicians often concentrate on courses in applied physics, electronics, mathematics and mechanical drawing. Schooling and the resulting certification can take one to two years to complete.

    Apprenticeships

    • Industrial HVAC technicians typically need to serve apprenticeships, which offer hands-on training along with classwork and examination. Apprenticeships take place early in a technician's career, and can last up to five years (and usually no less than three).

    On the Job

    • Industrial HVAC technicians often receive the bulk of their training after becoming a full-time employee, where they learn by trial and error and overall experience. When on the job, they also receive valuable training from supervisors and co-workers.
