What is a Multi-Switch?

A multi-switch is a device used to split the KU bandwidth signal from a satellite television dish and distribute it to multiple receivers. Multi-switches are commonly used to distribute the signal from one satellite dish to apartment building units or office buildings.

Each of the dishes in the system is equipped with either a horizontal or vertical transponder Low Noise Block converter. The multi-switch contains signal splitters and A/B switches, according to Scatmag.com,. The incoming signals are divided to create the digital TV signal for each apartment or office connected to the multi-switch.

    Passive and Active

    • Passive multi-switches are best used for small systems without long stretches of coaxial cable between the system elements. Because long cables can degrade the signal strength, active multi-switches use external power to operate the switches inside and may also contain solid state amplifiers to boost signal strength
