Definition of Telecommunications Apprentice

Telecommunications apprentices learn their trade through classroom and on-the-job training.

Electronic telecommunication technicians are frequently trained through a government- or trade union-sponsored telecommunications apprenticeship program. The curriculum combines classroom and field training in the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic telecommunications equipment.

Duties

In addition to attending classes, a telecommunications apprentice must shadow the technician providing the training to learn job basics. The apprentice assists in troubleshooting electronic equipment, maintaining inventory, keeping the tools and components orderly and interacting with customers.

Required Skills

Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and math acumen enable apprentices to quickly grasp electronic theories and concepts and apply them to practical tasks. Knowledge of electrical systems, safety precautions and schematic, blueprint and diagram interpretation is helpful.

Other Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required to qualify for most apprenticeship programs. Good physical fitness is necessary to stand, bend and stoop for extended periods of time. Being comfortable working on high ladders and in extreme temperatures is necessary.
