Medical Equipment Certification

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) was founded in 1967 as a not-for-profit organization. It offers certification in laboratory equipment (CLES), biomedical equipment (CBET) and radiology equipment (CRES).

  1. Eligibility

    • Candidates interested in obtaining CBET, CRES or CLES certification must have completed a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program and two years of full-time work, or have an associate's degree in a biomedical program and two years' full-time work, or four years' full-time work experience. CLES candidates must also have an associate's degree in medical laboratory technology and three years of full-time work, or a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technology and two years' full-time work experience.

    Preparation

    • Each exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions in five subject areas: medical equipment problem solving, fundamentals of electricity, electronics and solid-state devices, medical equipment function and operation, and anatomy and physiology. Review courses and study groups are available through the AAMI.

    Fees and Schedule

    • The AAMI lists the testing centers and dates on its website (see Resources), along with special considerations if you live over 250 miles from a testing center, are in the military or need to test on Sunday because of religious obligations. The certification exam costs $315 as of 2010.
