Why Are Uplink & Downlink Frequencies Different? thumbnail
A dish-shaped antenna sends and receives satellite signals.

In satellite telecommunications terminology, uplink means the signal sent from Earth to the satellite and downlink means the signal from the satellite to earth. The uplink and downlink signals to and from a specific satellite must be different.

  1. Uplink Frequency

    Downlink Frequency

    • An Earth station constantly sends a specific uplink frequency that identifies it from other stations. The transmit signal must be strong enough to reach the satellite.

    Same Frequency

    • If uplink and downlink frequencies were the same, both Earth stations and satellites would only receive the signal they transmit. It would be so strong it would drown out the signal from the opposite end.
