Many wonder how to appropriately respond to employee theft.

Employee theft is a serious problem for businesses. Theft of product or theft of income can cause an otherwise profitable business to flounder and create a breach of trust between an employer and employee. Employers are often at a loss as to what to do with a thieving employee.

  1. Documentation

    • Attempt to document what is missing and exactly how much. Track actions of employees and attempt to narrow down the suspects by changing passwords. Institute a "no backpacks/purses/bags" policy in the workplace. With evidence in hand, consult a legal professional to be sure you've gathered the evidence legally and to get advice on the course of action.

    Confrontation

    • Confront suspected employees. Avoid outright accusations. Lay out your suspicions and document the problems. Wait for the employee's reaction, and have an open mind. Sometimes there is a logical explanation you may have missed.

    Consequences

    • If an employee confesses, it's important to dismiss him from his job promptly. He should not have access to a back room or storage, and insist on getting keys promptly. Change the locks, passwords and routines immediately. It's possible to prosecute, as well. Consider all the costs before embarking on that course.
