How do I Wear an Abdominal Binder? thumbnail
Use an abdominal binder after surgery.

An abdominal binder is a large piece of stretchy material similar to a bandage. It is worn around the abdomen after surgery. They are typically used after a Caesarean section, liposuction and after any surgery that involves an opening of the stomach.

  1. Application

    • Stand up and roll the abdominal binder out behind you; keep the upper part of the bandage directly underneath your navel button; pull one end around your body and then do the same with the other end. Press the binder down firmly to secure it.

    Drainage Tubes

    • If the surgery you have had requires drainage of excess fluids from the wound you can make an incision in the abdominal binder using an elliptical cut to provide a point of exit for the tube.

    Cleaning

    • For hygiene purposes you must wash the abdominal binder. The binder is held together using Velcro, to prevent an accumulation of lint stick the Velcro together. Do not use harsh detergents like bleach; you can hand wash it or use a washing machine set for cold water.
