Power Stroke Engine Oil Specifications
Ford Motor Co. has been using turbocharged power-stroke diesel engines in its heavy-duty pickup trucks 1994. Four generations of engines have been built over that time, requiring owners to follow oil specifications that can vary with each generational change.

7.3-Liter Engine

Ford's first turbo-diesel is its largest and was last used in the 2002 Ford F-250. This engine requires 15.1 quarts of motor oil. At temperatures above 10 degrees F, 15W-40 motor oil is recommended; 5W-30 can be used at temperatures under 30 degrees F.
6.0-Liter Engine

Heavy-duty Ford model year 2003 to 2007 trucks offered a 6.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. This engine requires 14.9 quarts of motor oil; 15W-30 is sufficient for temperatures above 10 degrees F and 5W-30 and 5W-40 for temperatures from -20 to -30 degrees F.

6.4-Liter Engine

A 6.4-liter diesel was available in 2008 to 2010 Ford pickup trucks. This engine requires 15.1 quarts of motor oil; 5W-40 is sufficient to use at temperatures above 4 degrees F. At temperatures below 122 degrees Fahrenheit, 0W-40 and 0W-30 motor oil can be used.
6.7-Liter Engine

Beginning with 2011 pickup trucks, a 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine was made available. This engine requires 13.2 quarts of motor oil; 0W-40 and 0W-30 may be used at temperatures below 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
