About Steel Building Parts

About Steel Building Parts thumbnail
Steel building parts are both strong and durable.

Steel is believed to have first been created around 200 B.C., and since has become a major component in the construction industry, according to the World Steel Association. This is because steels are stronger, lighter and more versatile than many other building materials, as their chemical make-up can be altered to suit a specific purpose. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Creating Steel

    • Steel is an alloy of iron made by melting a mixture of iron ore, limestone and coke together in a furnace. The steel created is strong, flexible and lightweight, making it an ideal material for use in building. Scrap steel can also be recycled by being melted down and remolded to perform a new purpose.

    Types of Steel

    • The properties of steel can be changed to suit a particular building need, such as high strength for beams and girders or flexibility in earthquake-prone areas. So far there are over 3,500 types of steel, each with a different use in building parts and construction, according to LivingSteel.org.

    Uses of Steel in Building

    • Steel is used in many building parts including wires, bars, beams, girders, coils, rails, wheels, switches and axles in automobiles. Steel can also be used to create entire buildings. As the parts are formed in a factory, these buildings are often quicker to erect than their traditional counterparts. Another benefit of steel buildings is that as they are lighter, they require a much smaller foundation.
