Poverty & Social Impact Analysis

Poverty and Social Impact Analysis (PSIA) is a way of looking at poverty and the social impacts of policy using a specifically designed method. This is a tool that helps governments to understand specifically how their policies impact the poor in order to develop more effective policies.

  1. Function

    • PSIA involves 10 specific steps meant to analyze and understand the process by which poverty and policy are connected in an individual nation. This includes gathering and analyzing data, engaging in a dialogue with those who are invested in these policies, looking at the impact of the current policies and creating public debate.

    Features

    • In collaboration, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank have been using PSIA since 2005 to look at poverty in developing countries and help these countries develop new strategies to fight poverty.

    Significance

    • PSIA has been used to evaluate countries affected by the global economic crisis. This has included countries such as the Philippines and the Ukraine. PSIA studies have also been done in Africa and Armenia, where the impact of the global crisis was studied in terms of unemployment, migration, food, and health-care services.
