Certified Woundcare Specialist Training
A wound care specialist certification is considered the most advanced certification in wound care by the American Academy of Wound Management. Because this certification requires such a high degree of expertise in wound care, certification as a would care specialist requires extensive training.

Healthcare Professional

To be eligible for certification as a wound care specialist the applicant must be a licensed healthcare with a minimum of a bachelor's degree. This includes physicians, podiatrists, nurses, physician's assistant and physical therapists.
Experience

The applicant must have completed three or more years of clinical wound care experience prior to applying for initial certification and sitting for the certification exam. The applicant may also meet experience requirements for the initial certification by completing a fellowship program that is certified by a credentialing organization for wound care that is at least one year long and supplying a letter of recommendation from the program director and a certified wound specialist who was involved in the program.

Continuing Education

To maintain certification, wound care specialists must complete six hours of continuing education each year, to be completed by the end of December. Continuing education courses must be pertinent to wound care.
