DOT Regulations & Accidents

The Department of Transportation's accident regulations are designed to promote public safety by identifying unsafe carriers and ensuring rapid responses to hazardous conditions. DOT trucking regulations are enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

  1. Drugs & Alcohol

    • Drivers must submit to drug and alcohol testing following involvement in a fatal accident, and in some cases involving moving violations. If a driver is cited and the accident resulted in an injury requiring off-site treatment or disabling vehicle damage, he's required to be tested.

    Hazardous Materials

    • Drivers hauling hazardous materials must call the National Response Center immediately if they've been in an accident in which the material was released. If an infectious biological agent is released during an accident, drivers can report the incident to the Centers for Disease Control.

    Reports and Records

    • A hazmat carrier must report to the DOT any accident involving a fatality, serious injury or disabling vehicle damage. All carriers must keep a detailed record of any accident in an accident register for three years after the event.
