Simple & Advanced Search of Information
You can use a variety of techniques to look things up on the Internet. While simple searches are quick and handy, they may return too many results. More advanced techniques will narrow the search to help you find what you really want.
-
Simple Search
-
You can type simple requests of a few words into a search site, such as "hybrid car," and get decent results. You can also ask whole questions, like "What is the legal age for marriage in Wisconsin?" Searches such as
this usually return a long list of results, many of which may not fit your needs.
Exact Wording and Omitting Terms
-
By doing more advanced searches, you can get fewer and more meaningful results. Click on the search site's advanced search button. You'll see such features as matching the exact wording of your search phrase and omitting words you don't want to search for. For example, you may want to look for "hybrid car" but want to omit results containing "Honda."

Search within Domain
-
An advanced search page will also let you confine your search to a particular domain or website. You can, for example, look up all the references to "music" on Harvard University's site.
