The garbanzo bean, also known as the chickpea, is a legume in the Fabaceae plant family. The plant resembles a bush with hairy stems and leaves, and the beans grow inside pods. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Geography

    • Farmers have cultivated the chickpea plant for thousands of years in India, the Middle East and portions of Africa. Most of the chickpea plants grown in the United States come from California.

    • Garbanzo beans drape from the branches of the chickpea plant, an annual that ranges in height from eight to 40 inches. Two different types of chickpea plants exist; the kabuli, a variety that produces approximately 800 seeds per pound and is taller than the desi; a plant that produces 1,500 seeds per pound.

    Other Names

    • In addition to chickpea, the garbanzo bean is also known as common gram, Bengal gram, pea bean, ceci, Indian gram and gram pea.
