Texas Forklift Operator Training

OSHA demands those working with forklifts in Texas to have training

Before you can operate forklift you must have undergone training beforehand. This can be done through a private company, your own company or an outside source. However, your company must have proof of your training for legal reasons.

  1. OSHA Requirements

    • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that, by law, anyone who uses a forklift must have undergone training in compliance with OSHA regulations. Although some states created their own plans for forklift guidelines, Texas follows OSHA regulations. When you are searching for a training program or company, ensure they cover OSHA requirements applicable to Texas standards.

    In-House Training Programs

    • The most convenient method is to have a trainer come to your company and provide the education needed for staff that haven't completed their program. Some companies even provide a service where they "train the trainer," meaning they will train someone at your company who will then be responsible for educating your employees, rather than having an external company come each time for new staff members.

    Length of Program

    • Although training program length can vary between instructors, the average length of class is two to three hours. Study is completed with a booklet provided by the instructor to learn OSHA standards and operation techniques. At the end of the session each student will be given a chance to demonstrate they are able to safely maneuver a forklift.

    Proof of Certification

    • When you or your employees successfully complete a course, they receive a certificate as well as a wallet card. Companies who employee forklift operators are required by OSHA to keep a copy of this documentation on file; employees should also keep their cards handy in case of an inspection or question of eligibility.
