Professional organizers can choose what type of organization they want to perform. This involves organizing and controlling general clutter, designing specialized storage spaces and/or space planning or developing sophisticated filing systems. Some organizers even help with time planning and management.

Organizers must access the space and decide if a particular possession is valuable, a tool, needs to be recycled or is trash.
