How do I Reuse 2L Bottles?

How do I Reuse 2L Bottles? thumbnail
An empty plastic bottle can become a handy household object.

The plastic that goes into making 2L (liter) bottles is made with crude oil, a non-renewable resource. Twenty percent of this plastic is recycled into new bottles, but there are some uses for the bottles themselves.

  1. Terrarium

    • Cut a flap in the side of a 2L bottle big enough for a hand to fit through. Place a layer of sand and potting soil in the bottom and add seeds. Moisten the soil and tape the flap closed. Leave the bottle in a sunny location and watch the plants grow.

    Plant Irrigation

    • Cut the bottom off a bottle and remove the twist-on lid. Stick the top of the bottle into the soil next to the plant and fill it with water to maintain a steady irrigation. Use a dowel to keep the bottle steady.

    Traction

    • Instead of keeping bags of kitty litter or sand in the car during winter, put the litter or sand into 2L bottles and use the caps to seal them. The cap will keep any unused litter or sand from spilling inside the car.

    Spare Funnel

    • Cut the bottle in half and remove the lid for a easy and ready to use funnel.
