Information on 1960's Ford Trucks

The Ford Motor Company's line of pickup trucks saw a lot of change and innovation in the 1960s. New body styles and an improved interior made the vehicles more appealing. Their Ranchero models were designed to meet the increasing demand for light trucks with a sporty look.

  1. History

    • The recession of the late 1950s created a public demand for practical vehicles. Ford answered this call by redesigning the popular first-generation Ranchero. The early 1960s Ranchero was modeled after the popular Ford Falcon automobile. The change resulted in a smaller, sportier-looking vehicle that could get up to 30 miles per gallon.

    Significance

    • The Ranchero changed again in 1967. The vehicle got longer and sleeker looking, with a body designed around the Fairlane and Torino automobile styles. New options included bucket seats and powerful performance engines. The 428 Cobra Jet engine used by Ford after 1968 produced 410 horsepower.

    F Series

    • Ford's F Series trucks received engine and drivetrain improvements in the 1960s, as well as new body elements. The 170-horsepower, 300-cubic-inch straight six engine replaced the smaller 223, and twin I-beam suspension and coil springs provided a smoother ride. 1960s F Series trucks also took on a smoother look, with redesigned hoods and fender elements.
