What Is a CPM Chart Project? thumbnail
Critical Path Method (CPM) is valuable project management tool.

A CPM chart project is best defined by reviewing CPM/PERT project management tools and how they are used. Project managers use the tools to layout and chart step-by-step the most efficient way to complete a project.

  1. Definition

    • Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is where project managers determine and layout the specific activities required to complete a project. From PERT diagrams and charts, project managers can use the Critical Path Method (CPM) to determine the critical path to project completion.

    Function

    • First, project managers use the PERT system to establish a diagram or chart showing the various activities and sequences of activities associated with a project. The chart will show several potential paths. Project managers will then determine the critical path by adding the various activities and sequences together to determine which path sequence represent the longest calender time. The path with the longest calender time is the critical path for the project because it represents the less optimistic or more realistic outlook.

    Significance

    • Large projects, such as construction projects, are extremely complex and requires a strategic approach to project planning. The CPM/PERT system has been foundational to project planning since the 1950s.
