Comparing Walk-Behind Lawn Mowers

    • Gas models have the greatest horsepower, followed by electric and reel mowers respectively. However, reel mowers are the most energy-efficient, followed by electric and gas models respectively.

    Options

    • Each type of mower features common options, such as bagging. Gas mowers have the most options in regard to use, such as thatching or mulching, while reel mowers have few to no options other than bagging attachments.

    Advantages

    • Reel and electric mowers have no emissions and are quieter than gas mowers. Reel mowers are the easiest to maintain with the fewest moving parts. Gas mowers are the fastest and can be self-propelled.

    Disadvantages

    • Electric mowers have trouble mowing tall or dense ground cover while reel mowers have trouble mowing wet grass. Gas mowers require more repairs and frequent maintenance.

    Cost

    • Gas mowers are the most cost-effective options for lawns over one acre or sloping terrain. Reel mowers are the most cost-effective for small lawns where mowing is the only task. Electric mowers are cost-effective when limited physical activity by the operator is required in regard to endurance or strength.
