The color of a kitchen floor can really change the feel of the room.

Both light and dark flooring for kitchens have their own pros and cons. Not only should the design of the room be taken into account, the kind of abuse and traffic your kitchen floor will be exposed to should be as well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Design

    • Some interior designers and builders say that light floors "open up" a room and can lighten an area that doesn't have many windows or natural light. Alternately, some designers say that dark floors can create a "warm" room that feels more intimate and cuts down on excessive brightness.

    Cleaning

    • Dust, pet hair and dirt will contrast greater on a dark floor than a light floor, so dark floors usually have to be cleaned more often than light floors. Scratches are also more obvious on darker floors. White floors tend to mask dust and other debris better, but scuff marks will show up much clearer. Also, if a light floor gets dented, dirt will build up in the dents and make it harder to clean.

    Considerations

    • If your kitchen is going to have a lot of traffic, you may want to consider a darker floor that will mask the dents and scuff marks. If there won't be much traffic in your kitchen but it will still be used, you may want to use a lighter floor so you don't have to clean it as often.
