Why Print With MICR Toner?

You can print your own checks and avoid the premium some banks charge for this service --- sometimes more than $30 for a box of checks. Printing with MICR allows you to make your own checks.

    • Modern checks use Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR), which contains magnetic iron oxide. Banks use MICR readers to automate check processing. You can print your own checks as long as you use MICR toner.

    Considerations

    • You can print your own checks with regular toner, but expect the check to take much longer to process because of extra verification measures by the bank. Also, banks may charge a fee for not using MICR toner.

    • Smart Money Daily recommends using check stock with MICR toner to reduce check fraud. Check stock contains security features, such as a watermark, to reduce the ability of a person to alter your check.
