Textiles are a major U.S. industry, and one which has many aspects in terms of employment and career choices. Training courses cover varied manufacturing processes, weaving and knitting methods, dyeing and finishing. Added to these are many courses in textile design.

The majority of work available in the textile industry is for production workers. Training people in production procedures usually takes place at work, either through a mentoring process or formal classes. Apprenticeships are available in some specialist areas such as weaving.
College Courses

The University of Massachusetts (UMass) and the Fashion Institute of Technology are just two of the colleges recommended by the U.S. National Textile Association. The UMass degree courses focus on textile engineering, technology and chemistry. The undergraduate degree is a four-year course and the graduate course, two years. The Fashion Institute of Technology offers a variety of accredited courses and workshops on design, technology, color and textile science for students already working in the industry. Costs vary according to course duration.

Skills needed by the textile industry are changing rapidly along with the production technology. Non-profit organizations, such as Canada's "Textiles Human Resources Council," provide online learning programs about industry new best practices, business skills, health and safety issues, and personal computer use. It also liaises with education providers to offer certificated training. These are available to textile companies and individuals outside Canada.
