Meal Supervisor Training
A meal supervisor works in the food-service industry, either in a restaurant or cafeteria, or as a caterer. Meal supervisors oversee all aspects of food preparation, from planning the menu to cooking to serving. Additionally, meal supervisors hire, schedule and organize chefs, hosts, servers and other members of a kitchen staff.

Meal supervisors must possess a high-school diploma and some experience working in the food-service industry. Some even attend culinary school, where they focus on courses in food preparation. Others attend four-year universities, where they concentrate on studies in related areas, such as communications or nutrition.
Certification
-
Almost all meal supervisor positions require some form of certification, whether it is in food preparation or business management. Certification programs vary and can be obtained from professional organizations or culinary schools, and generally take anywhere from several months to a couple years to complete.

On the Job
-
Most meal supervisors can receive the needed training as members of a food-service staff, either as servers or cooks, where they receive hands-on experience. This choice will take more time to work up to a supervisory position than other avenues.
