Manual Physical Therapy Certification

Skill requirements for a physical therapy assistant include therapeutic massage, soft tissue mobilization and passive range of motion. These skills are used in manual physical therapy. Certification in manual physical therapy involves therapeutic, medical massage.

  1. Massage

    • Certification by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork allows a massage therapist to practice manual physical therapy. Manual therapy provided by a massage therapist does not complete the skill requirements for a physical therapist assistant.

    PTA

    • The physical therapy assistant exam requirements include neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and knowledge of the supportive medical devices. A PTA certification is assessed by the American Physical Therapy Association.

    Education

    • Several avenues in education support a manual physical therapy certification. Programs that emphasize science-based foundations, health promotion and communication skills advance the student towards a PTA certification.
